Japan Information Center Library

The Japan Information Center (JIC) maintains a library of books, periodicals, films, and CDs to help you explore and discover Japan and Japanese culture. Anyone is welcome to browse the library, but only residents of Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin may borrow our materials. Please note that the library is intended as a source of general information on Japan and not as a research library.

Guidelines and applications for using the JIC Resource Library are provided below:

Must be completed and submitted to the JIC in order to check out any resources from the library. A government-issued photo ID is also required. - Media Loan Request Form [PDF]
Must be completed and submitted to the JIC library each time a video or DVD is requested.
Holdings

The JIC library has over 3700 books in both Japanese and English covering a wide variety of Japan-related topics and genres including manga, cookbooks, language-learning materials, novels, and social analyses. The “Kodomo Corner” is filled with children’s books in Japanese and English as well as a variety of hands-on activities for our youngest patrons.
Additionally, the JIC subscribes to a variety of Japanese newspapers including The Japan Times. These and other periodicals and journals are not available for loan but can be enjoyed in the library during regular business hours.
The JIC’s media library houses more than 400 videos and DVDs. Most have English narration and/or subtitles though a few are solely in Japanese. The educational films including ten years of Japan Video Topics are available to anyone in our jurisdiction for private, non-commercial viewings.
