Greeting from Consul General Tajima
2021/10/5
Thank you for visiting the Consulate-General of Japan in Chicago homepage. My name is TAJIMA Hiroshi, and I assumed the position as Consul-General of Japan in Chicago on September 10, 2021.
My past work has often centered on relations between Japan and the United States, and I previously served for the Permanent Mission of Japan to the United Nations in New York. However, this is my first time coming to Chicago.
Before I left Tokyo, I learned from many people that Chicago and the 10 Midwestern states, which this Consulate serves, are truly symbolic of traditional America. Though it has only been less than a month since my arrival in Chicago, everyone I have met has been extremely kind and open-hearted. I am sure that I will enjoy serving here.
As the third largest city in the United States, Chicago is a city of music and the arts, the home of famous sports teams, and a vital political and economic center. Furthermore, the 10 states which this Consulate serves have deep ties to Japan, with up to 1,600 Japanese companies generating as many as 150,000 jobs in the region. These companies have enjoyed great success while contributing not only to the local but also to the United States economy and community. There are more than 70 municipalities with sister cities in Japan, as well as various Japanese cultural organizations, fans of anime and Japanese pop culture, and those involved with Japanese language education, traditional performing arts, and martial arts. I believe that it is my important duty to maintain and develop these precious ties, which are the result of many people’s tireless efforts.
Since last year, the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has forced us to forgo activities that many people had been anticipating. Moving forward, it is my hope that we can resume these activities and strengthen Japan-U.S. and Japan-Midwest relations even further as we continue to closely monitor the COVID-19 situation. Of course, our highest priority is the health and safety of Japanese nationals and residents, and the Consulate will provide its utmost support. Please feel free to reach out to the Consulate.
I will be grateful for your continued cooperation.
