Minazuki, the old Japanese name for the month of June, means "water month." June - early July is monsoon season (tsuyu), where heavy rainfall occurs for a period of about 6 weeks throughout Japan. This website details average weather and precipitation patterns in Tokyo.
There are no official holidays in June, but Cavity Prevention Day (Mushiba no hi) is the start of Dental Hygiene Week at the beginning of the month. Additionally, Father's Day, the third Sunday in June, is increasingly becoming a popular day for families to celebrate.

“Japan is back,” declared Shinzo Abe, Prime Minister of Japan, in a major speech in Washington this year. It may well be that the country’s ‘lost decade’ of persistent low growth and deflation has come to an end, bolstered by his ‘Abenomics’—a three-pronged strategy of bold monetary policy, flexible fiscal policy, and structural reforms. Yet the country is facing several other hurdles. Domestically, it is experiencing the economic and social costs of an aging population and the ongoing recovery following the 2011 tsunami. Moreover, Asia’s geopolitical environment remains challenging, as highlighted by the intensified regional territorial disputes and North Korea’s nuclear program. What does the future hold for Japan? Please join The Chicago Council on Global Affairs for a discussion with Japan's new ambassador on his country’s economic and foreign policy priorities.

The Japanese Chamber of Commerce in Chicago and the Japanese Chamber of Commerce Foundation present a 2 Day charity project at the Japan Festival that features Mr. Yasokichi Konishiki. Konishiki (born Saleva’a Fuauli Atisano’e) is a former sumo wrestler who was born in Hawaii to Samoan parents but moved to Japan at the age of 18. During his sumo career, he won three top division championships and became the first non-Japanese born wrestler to reach ozeki rank (which is the second highest rank in sumo).
Day 1 (Friday) - Konishiki and his wife Taupou are bringing a special Hawaiian night to Chicago! The performance will include Hawaiian songs, hula dance and a kid's show for families of all ages to enjoy. Admission is $20 per seat. All proceeds from this charity event benefit the JCCC Foundation, which supports Chicago area educational, cultural, and community organizations.
Day 2 (Saturday) - Konishiki will be making his special chanko, a type of Japanese stew commonly eaten by sumo wrestlers. Suggested donation is $5 per bowl. 100% of the profit will go towards Konishiki Kids Foundation, in which the money will be used for supporting the children affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake.
Be sure to stop by the JCCC Charity Events Website for more information.

Welcome to the new and updated JIC Library section of the e-Japan Journal! Recently, the JIC library has been receiving quite a few book and media donations. While I try to read/watch/listen to as many as I can to provide a first-hand report, it is impossible to highlight every single one. Every month, I have a difficult time choosing only one or two to feature and all too often there are great resources that have to be shelved without recognition. Therefore, in an effort to better familiarize you with the wide variety of materials available, we have decided to divide the former What's New in the Library section into two separate components.
The first section Highlighted Resources will feature notable books and media available here at the JIC library. This column will be similar to previous months' articles by providing a general overview, classroom connections, personal impressions, etc. for one or two resources. Some of these materials may be new, others will be old, but all will have been on my reading list. The second section New Editions will vary in length as its main purpose will be to list the library's newest acquisitions. Each of these items will be linked to a bookseller's overview for your convenience. However, please note that these links will be chosen solely on availability of a description of the specified item and that the Consulate General of Japan at Chicago does not espouse any specific company.
It is our hope that with the format you will be able to better benefit from the wide variety of materials the library has to offer. And as always, if you have any questions, comments, or suggestions, feel free to contact me directly at emily.toelcke@cg.mofa.go.jp. Happy Summer Reading!

 Japanese Recipes from allrecipes.com
I love Japanese food. So much so that I often find myself nostalgic of some of the great eats I had when living in Japan. With wonderful resources in the Midwest like Mitsuwa Marketplace (IL), One World Market (IN), or Oriental Shop (WI), I want to shop for ingredients with a purpose. I think this month I am going to try my hand at making some of my culinary favorites.
I wholeheartedly encourage you to do the same! If you have a particular dish or have created a culinary masterpiece yourself that you would like to share with us (photos optional), send it to me at jic@cg.mofa.go.jp. There are so many delicious choices...I am not sure which ones I will end up trying. I'll keep everyone posted!

Summer is here! ☼ ☀ ☼ ☀ ☼ ☀ ☼
As many of you may know, under "Abenomics," or the economic policies being enacted by Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and his Cabinet, the price of the yen is lower. This makes it extremely favorable to the US dollar right now. As a result, foreign travel to Japan is soaring. These articles from the Japan Times that were posted on our Twitter in March and in April and this article from CNNMoney discuss the positive impacts of "Abenomics" thus far.
The JIC has materials for you if you plan on travelling to Japan this summer. We recently updated our free resources request page and can provide you with information on prefectures, cities, or towns you are intending to visit. Furthermore, The Japan National Tourism Organization is an invaluable source with travel tips to help you plan. Enjoy your visit!
Best,
Amy Klouse (Editor, Technology and Information Coordinator)
